The present 34 months project
proposal deals with synthesis,
characterization and application of certain types
of ionic liquids (fluid
liquids at temperatures under 1000C) as
environmentally friendly
electrolytes to perform some surface treatments of high performance with
applications in different industrial
areas as
electronic industry, electrical engineering, machine building industry,
autovehicles domain. With this in
view, experimental activities are concentrated on investigation of ionic liquid
medium based on choline chloride(2 hidroxy – ethyl-thrimethyl ammonium) and urea
(NH2C=ONH2), characterized by a minimum impact on
environment, that is recyclable, biodegradable and non-toxic, that has proved to
be an attractive electrolyte for applications in galvanotechnics, respectively
for electrodeposition of pure metals and alloys, electropolishing of stainless
steel and valve metals (Al, Ti, Ta).
Thus the
following issues are taken into consideration:
(i) synthesis, physical-chemical and electrochemical characterization of some
ionic liquids based on choline chloride as a base for
electrolytes preparation used in
electrochemical electrodeposition processes of metallic coatings with functional
and protective characteristics (Ni, Cu, Sn, Ag, Al, V and their alloys) with
applications in electrical engineering, electronic industries (in fabrication
flows of PCBs) and in electropolishing
of metallic surfaces of stainless steel, Al, Ti;
(ii) evaluation, testing and validation of the new elaborated technologies with
demonstration of functionality including their use on technological flows of
PCBs.
The main advantage of the development and promotion of
the use of these new electrochemical media refers not only at the accumulation
of new scientific information (this is a
relatively new domain that proved new possibilities in the last five years) but
also allows the minimization of production costs, of industrial waste
quantities, with positive effects on environment and health.
